In the 1970s Bennett manufactured women's shirts. He subsequently established the label Country Road. Country Road developed into a fashion lifestyle retail empire.

Career Highlights


In 1984 Country Road launched Country Road Menswear. In 1989 Country Road launched a homewares range. In 1995 Bennett withdrew from day-to-day management but remained on the board of directors. Subsequently Bennett was involved with English designer, Terence Conran, in the development of a large-scale specialty store on the site of the former prestigious Melbourne department store, Georges. The new Georges opened 1998 but failed to win consumer support and closed 1999.
